Venmo Payment Pending but Money Taken? What It Means
Seeing money leave your bank or card while Venmo still says Pending can make it look as though the money has disappeared. But the status of the Venmo transaction matters more than simply seeing a debit at your bank.
There are two different pending situations you should distinguish before taking action.
Why Did Venmo Take My Money if the Payment Is Pending?
| What You See | Possible Explanation | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending + Take Back | The payment may be unclaimed because the recipient’s email or phone number isn’t associated with an active Venmo account. | Verify the recipient information before deciding whether to take it back. |
| Pending + estimated completion date | A bank-funded payment may still be clearing. | Check Venmo’s displayed completion estimate. |
| Completed | The transaction is no longer an ordinary pending payment. | Do not treat it as an unclaimed payment. |
| Under Review | The payment may be going through a separate Venmo review process. | Follow Venmo’s account-specific instructions. |
Situation 1: The Recipient Hasn’t Claimed the Money
Venmo says that if you send money to an email address or phone number that isn’t verified or isn’t associated with a Venmo account, the transaction will appear as Pending.
Importantly, Venmo says your payment method will still be charged, even though the money hasn’t yet reached the recipient.
Your bank/card can show the money leaving while Venmo still shows Pending and the recipient says they haven’t received it.
The recipient may need to finish creating their Venmo account or verify the specific email address or phone number to which you sent the money.
Situation 2: Your Bank-Funded Payment Is Still Clearing
Venmo separately says certain payments funded from a bank account may remain Pending while the bank processes them.
For this particular type of pending transaction, Venmo currently says processing typically takes 3–5 business days.
Venmo says the transaction should show an estimated completion date in your Transactions feed.
Has the Recipient Actually Received the Money?
Not necessarily.
A debit appearing at your bank does not by itself prove that the recipient received the Venmo payment.
If the payment is pending because the destination email address or phone number isn’t associated with an active Venmo account, Venmo specifically says the money won’t reach the recipient until the recipient completes the required account setup or verification.
Check the status inside Venmo rather than relying only on your bank transaction history.
What Should I Check First?
Confirm whether it says Pending, Completed or something else.
If one appears, you may be dealing with a bank-funded payment still clearing.
This can indicate an unclaimed payment sent to contact information not associated with an active Venmo account.
Ask the recipient which exact email address or U.S. phone number is verified on their Venmo account.
The original transaction may still be completed or claimed.

Can I Take Back the Pending Payment?
Sometimes.
Venmo says the Take Back option is available when the recipient’s phone number or email address is not associated with an active Venmo account.
To check in the app:
- Open Venmo.
- Go to the Me tab.
- Find the payment in your Transactions feed.
- Look underneath it for Take Back.
If the option isn’t present, don’t assume that something is wrong. Your transaction may be in a different pending state.
What Happens After I Take Back the Payment?
Venmo says the money is returned to the original funding source.
| Original Payment Method | Venmo’s Current Return Guidance |
|---|---|
| Venmo balance | The return should generally be reflected right away. |
| Bank account | Venmo says it can take up to 5 business days. |
| Debit or credit card | Venmo says it can take up to 7 business days to appear on the statement. |
Venmo says these return times can depend on external factors and cannot be expedited.
What If I Don’t Take Back the Payment?
If an eligible unclaimed payment isn’t claimed or taken back, Venmo says it will automatically expire after 30 days and the money will return to the original payment method.
Should I Send the Money Again?
Usually, the safest first step is to determine what happened to the original payment.
Sending the same amount again while the first transaction remains unresolved can create a duplicate-payment problem if the original payment later completes or is claimed.
What If the Payment Says Completed?
A completed payment requires a different approach.
Venmo specifically warns against asking your bank to cancel or stop a Completed Venmo payment as though it were still a pending bank transaction. Venmo says doing so can create a loss on your Venmo account that you would need to repay.
If the completed payment went to the wrong person or you suspect fraud, use Venmo’s official support process for that situation.
What If I Don’t Recognize the Payment?
An unfamiliar transaction should not simply be treated as an ordinary processing delay.
Secure your account and use Venmo’s official support channels. Depending on where the money was drawn from, you may also need to contact your bank or card issuer.
Do not provide passwords, verification codes or full financial credentials to someone who contacts you unexpectedly claiming to be Venmo support.

Bottom Line
If your Venmo payment is pending but money was taken, first determine whether you’re looking at an unclaimed recipient payment or a bank-funded transaction that is still clearing.
If you see Take Back, verify the recipient’s contact information. If you see an estimated completion date, check whether the payment was funded from your bank account.
Most importantly, don’t assume that money leaving your funding account means the recipient received it—and don’t automatically send a second payment before resolving the first.
